Lung Cancer Screening

ACR Lung Cancer Screening Center Designation ACR for Lung Cancer Screening

Grossmont Imaging has been designated a Lung Cancer Screening Center by the American college of Radiology (ACR).

The ACR Lung Cancer Screening Center designation is a voluntary program that recognizes facilities that have committed to practice safe, effective diagnostic care for individuals at the highest risk for lung cancer.

In order to receive this elite distinction, facilities bust be accredited by the ACR in computed tomography in the chest module, as well as undergo a rigorous assessment of its lung cancer screening protocol and infrastructure. Also required are procedures in place for follow-up patient care, such as counseling and smoking cessation programs.

Lung cancer screening with low-dose computed tomography scans, and appropriate follow-up care, significantly reduces lung cancer deaths.

In December 2013, the United States Preventive Service Task Force recommended screening for the following:

  • Adults between the ages of 55-80 years who have a 30 pack year smoking history and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years.

Lung cancer is the nation’s leading cancer killer- taking the lives of more people each year than breast, colon and prostate cancer combined.

The National Lung Screening Trial

The National Lung Screening Trial, a large recent study conucted by the American College of Radiology Imaging Network and the Lung Screening Study group, showed that participants had a significantly reduced risk of dying of lung cancer. The trial, performed betweeen 2002 and 2010, enrolled over 50,000 current or former heavy smokers, ages 55-74, with at least 30 "pack-years" of smoking history (calculated by multiplying the average number of packs of cigarettes smoked per day by the number of years a person has smoked). Participants who were screened for lung cancer with regular CT scans with lowered radiation dose showed up to 20% decreased risk of dying from lung cancer compared to screening with chest x-ray, according to results published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2011. The beneft stems from detecting lung cancer at an early stage, before symptoms develop.
